Introduction of the Department of Food Science and Engineering

The Department of Food Science and Engineering is affiliated to the college of Food Science and Engineering of Jilin University. It was established in June 2015 due to the adjustment of disciplines and had a major of Food Science and Engineering. The predecessor of the major of Food Science and Engineering of Jilin University can be traced back to the major of Animal Food and Hygiene Inspection enrolled in 1984. It began to recruit undergraduates majoring in Food Science and Engineering in 1995, and recruited students in the major categories of Food Science and Engineering in 2018. After more than 30 years of development, this major has formed a three-level talent training system for doctoral graduate education, master graduate education, and undergraduate education. Jilin University's Food Science and Engineering major was approved for the Master of Animal Food Hygiene Inspection in 1984 and the Master of Agricultural Products Processing and Storage was approved in 1986. It was approved as a first-level discipline master's authorization point in Food Science and Engineering, a first-level discipline doctoral authorization point in Food Science and Engineering, and a first-level discipline post-doctoral mobile station in 2000, 2011, and 2019, respectively. In the same year, the major was approved as the country’s first batch of outstanding agricultural and forestry talents education and training program reform pilot project. And the major was determined to be the key construction specialty of Jilin Province, the brand major of Jilin Province colleges and universities, and the plateau discipline group of Jilin University. In addition, as the first major of Jilin University to pass the national engineering education certification, it passed the national engineering education certification three times in 2009, 2015 and 2018, respectively. It was selected as a category A major in the "13th Five-Year" high-level professional (group) construction project of ordinary colleges and universities in Jilin Province in 2018 and was selected as the first batch of national first-class undergraduate major construction sites in 2019.

The Department of Food Science and Engineering has 28 full-time teachers, of which 86% have doctorate degrees, 62% of the teachers have overseas study experience, 22 teachers with senior titles, and 8 doctoral supervisors. The department has 1 deputy director of the Professional Teaching Steering Committee on 2018-2022 Food Science and Engineering under the Ministry of Education, 1 top-notch innovative talent in Jilin Province, 1 professional and technical talent with outstanding contribution in Jilin Province, and 1 selected candidate of the Jilin Province Youth Science and Technology Talent Support Project. The high-quality teaching staff provides a guarantee for the training of high-level talents.

The Department has established a provincial functional food engineering research center, a high-value animal by-product utilization engineering research center, a provincial food science and engineering professional experimental teaching demonstration center, and a provincial key laboratory for nutrition and functional food, as well as many professional laboratories and pilot workshops for food basic, food safety, food engineering, food technology, etc. The department carries out targeted academic innovation team cultivation in the separation, preparation, absorption and activity research of active protein and functional peptide, functional dairy product research and development, food biotechnology, development of Changbai Mountain characteristic resource, agricultural product development and comprehensive utilization, agricultural and livestock products (meat) science and storage, agricultural animal product processing theory and new technology, food quality intelligent detection, etc. In addition, the department encourages the transformation and engineering of scientific research results and gradually realizes an international talent training model, and forms a characteristic food research and development platform in Jilin University. Teachers of the department have obtained the National Natural Science Foundation of China; the National "863" Program; the National Science and Technology Support Program; the Ministry of Science and Technology Special Program; the Ministry of Agriculture Science and Technology Special Project; provincial, ministerial, and municipal key research plans and fund projects; international cooperation plans; enterprises cooperation plans, and support of multi-channel technology plans. It has undertaken more than 200 national, provincial, and school-enterprise cooperative scientific research projects, and won more than 100 national, provincial and ministerial awards; authorized more than 60 national invention patents and more than 10 patent conversions. In addition, more than 300 SCI articles, more than 100 EI articles, and more than 30 academic compositions have been published.

The Department has gradually formed four research fields around the subject of "Food Science and Engineering", including 1. Food chemistry and biotechnology; 2. Functional food biological manufacturing; 3. Agricultural product storage and processing theory and technology; 4. Intelligent detection and control of food quality.
